Catalogue Note

Otto Sommer exhibited at the National Academy of Design between 1862 and 1866, at which time he was living in New York City. According to William Gerdts, he had moved west to Chicago by the late 1860s, and returned to Munich, Germany, from where he originally emigrated, before the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 (Art Across America, New York, 1990, vol. II, pp. 290, 292). His known work includes both New England and European landscapes, views of West Point on the Hudson, and Westward Ho! in the collection of the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
