Catalogue Note

According to the Alexander Gallery exhibition catalogue, "This remarkable painting integrates a topographical study and two closely observed mountain goats.  As a skillful hunter, Bierstadt accumulated a large collection of stuffed and mounted animals.  These two goats appear in a 1902 photograph of the artist's' studio (see: Hendricks, Albert Bierstadt, p. 319, illustrated fig. 232) and are now in the possession of the Boston Museum of Science.  This work was probably painted in the 1870's, a decade during which Bierstadt executed other compositions of western animals" (Albert Bierstadt: An Exhibition of Forty Paintings, New York, 1983).
