Condition

Overall condition good with the exception of occasional areas of lifting to lacquer in the location of where there has been movement with hinges. There are three small nicks to the lacquered top, the largest of which is approximately 1/4” long. The linings to all of the drawers have occasional age separation to the veneer, however the veneers remain stable. A minor loss to the inside edge of the left drawer where it connects to the hinge and is approximately 1 inch running parallel to the hinge. Cracking and lifting to lacquer above rear left leg inside. One crack is approximately 1 1/4 inches, the other crack approximately 1 inch. Occasional and very minor areas of touching in to the lacquer throughout, however overall the lacquered surfaces present well with good age patination. The ball joint mechanism to the mirror remains fully functional. The mirror plate has possibly been replaced. The dressing table retains a firm structure overall and this presents a rare opportunity to acquire this scarce model by two of the greatest French designers of the 20th century.

Catalogue Note

Lacquered by Jean Dunand in 1929, this dressing table is a true masterpiece, combining Dunand's delicate lacquer technique and Printz's superlative design sensibility and sense of motion. The precious black lacquer enhances the striking modernity of the table, contrasting beautifully with the metal frame of the mirror and its radical angles. Not only is this table a testimony of the collaboration between two iconic French Art Deco artists, it is also an avant-garde work, which prefigures other dressing tables, such as the one designed by Eugène Printz for the Princesse de la Tour d'Auvergne or the piece designed by René Herbst for Princess Aga Khan in 1932, currently in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.
