Description

  • Tiffany Studios
  • "Grape Trellis" Window
  • leaded glass with metal and painted wood frame (not illustrated)

Condition

Overall in good, stable condition. The central register of the window panel has been replaced with clear textured glass. There is evidence of prior restoration to the copper foil and lead caming throughout the outer registers of the panel, as well as some occasional added lead lines for stabilization. All of the glass appears to be original in the outer perimeter registers—there is no evidence of glass replacement. The panel with approximately 40-50 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout. The front of the panel retains two original reinforcement bars at the top and bottom of the panel; the third reinforcement bar that would have run through the middle of the panel is lacking. The grape clusters are plated on the reverse side of the panel, heightening the pictorial depth of the scene. The panel is presently installed in a later dark wood frame reinforced with steel. The window presents beautifully, displaying a highly dynamic composition with strong visual movement. When viewing the window firsthand the colors throughout are more vibrant and warmer than seen in the catalogue photograph, which is slightly too dark and red. Please note that the reverse side of the window panel is illustrated in the catalogue photograph. Please feel welcome to contact the department for additional photography showing both sides of the panel. If desired, a custom-designed light box executed in white painted wood will be available to the successful purchaser of this lot.
