Condition
Overall in good condition. When viewed in person, the turtle back tiles display a deep milky white coloration in the center surrounded by clear glass; the front exterior surfaces are subtly iridized, heightening the luminosity of the glass. Please note that the catalogue photography was taken with both frontal reflected and back remitted light; when viewed under standard reflected light conditions the tiles are slightly whiter and warmer in color. All the tiles appear original and undisturbed. The glass with a few minor air bubbles and particulate inclusions inherent in the making and not visually detracting. The tiles with a few inherent irregularities in the glass, visible in the catalogue illustration. With minor surface soiling scattered along the lead lines and recessed contours of the tiles. One of the tiles, visible on the lower right corner in the catalogue illustration, with a stable hairline crack running horizontally through the panel. The leading was originally gilt, with wear to the gilding along some of the leadlines. The tiles are set in a later elaborately carved oak frame, which is in a very good condition with minor surface scratches and abrasions consistent with age and gentle handling. The tile frieze can be mounted on a later demountable oak trestle table. (The trestle base is not illustrated in the catalogue, but will be presented to the successful purchaser of this lot, along with a clear glass top that confirms to the shape and size of the outer frame.) Please contact the 20th Century department for additional photographs of the table base.
