Catalogue Note

In 1894, Yamanaka Sadajirō (1866–1936) emigrated from Osaka to New York and opened a small antiques shop in Chelsea selling Japanese works of art. In subsequent years, international branches were established in Boston, London, Peking (now Beijing), Paris, and Shanghai. In 1917, Yamanaka's New York gallery took over a five-story building on Fifth Avenue.
