Condition

Overall in good condition. The lacquer with some minor hairline cracks consistent with age concentrated in the upper portion of the panel and the body of the birds. When examined under black light, the entire panel appears to have been applied with a later varnish, stabilizing some restorations scattered throughout. The upper edge appears to have been restored to cover some losses of lacquer which have been inpainted. The largest loss measuring approximately 1 ½ x 1 in. The mid portion of the bodies of the peacocks with an area of sensitively undertaken restoration and minor inpainting. The lower proper left corner with restoration to the lacquer and decorative motif. Please contact the department for additional photographs of the piece out of its frame. The piece is offered with an associated vellum-lined frame which is in good condition with minor surface scratches and a few minute abrasions. A beautiful work which epitomizes Jean Dunand’s talent in representing natural forms in an Art Deco aesthetic.
