Description

  • French Art Deco Screen
  • bronze signed A. Soleau
  • lacquered wood and gilt bronze

Condition

Overall in good condition. When viewed in person, the screen presents with a beautiful lacquer background with nuances of rich brown. The reverse of the panel is in the same lacquer as the front without any decoration. When open, the maximum width of the panel is approximately 90 inches. The lacquer with a few minor surface scratches and abrasions consistent with age and gentle use. The proper left panel with a few minor chips to the lacquer, the largest measuring ¼ x ¼ inch and visible in the catalogue illustration below the bronze inset. The edges of the panels with a few minor scattered chips consistent with gentle use, the two largest at the reverse of the third panel from the proper right and measuring approximately 1 7/8 x 1 inch. The bronze surfaces with minor surface scratches, minute abrasions and light surface dirt to the recessed portions, consistent with age and gentle use. The gilding is mostly rubbed, revealing the bronze surfaces, which is not visually disruptive. Some of the insets are slightly coming out from the wooden panels, without affecting the stability of the piece. A very decorative panel that epitomizes the Art Deco aesthetic.
