Description

  • Nazmi Ziya Güran
  • Rumelihisari, on the Bosphorus
  • signed and dated N Ziya / 30 lower left
  • oil on canvas
  • 65 by 81cm., 25½ by 32in.

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There is a pattern of craquelure primarily in the sky which, although raised (as visible in the catalogue illustration), appears to be stable overall. There are some faint stretcher marks in the centre and to the right edge. Under ultra-violet light the surface has a slightly uneven appearance due to the residual varnish layers. It is possible that there are some small spots of retouching, however the picture is otherwise in original condition. The picture could benefit from some light surface cleaning. Presented in a simple gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

The view, still recognisable today, is from the Asian side of the Bosphorus towards the Rumelihisarı, the fortress built by Sultan Mehmed II between 1451 and 1452. Associated with the so called ‘Generation of 1914’, Ziya Güran incorporated an Impressionistic style into his art, having studied for five years in the ateliers of Marcel Bachet and Fernand Cormon in Paris.
