Condition

The board is flat and ensuring a stable support. With the exception of some very small spots of cosmetic retouching, visible under ultra-violet light, both the verso and recto are almost untouched. On the verso there may be a vertical line of light rubbing in the upper centre, which appears to be under the varnish. The picture is in good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

Painted circa 1904. The 'Bardac' cited in the provenance may refer to Emma Bardac, whom Boldini painted in 1905. Married to the Paris banker Sigismond Bardac at the age of 17, Emma Bardac was a noted singer who had affairs with composers Fauré and subsequently Debussy, whom she married in 1908.
