Catalogue Note

Set against a dramatic sky, the silhouette of a castle and keep form the central motif of this fantastical landscape. The wholly imagined, spontaneously painted scene is striking in its delicate palette yet dynamic placement of fleeting clouds, jagged cliffs and giant boulder straddling a torrent. It is a fine example of the artist’s early ingenuity revealed in his works before he dedicated himself fully to his art and joined the Berlin Academy in 1822.

Inscriptions on the reverse suggest Blechen painted this landscape for a friend, and that it was probably one of the 43 works by the artist shown at the 1906 Berlin Jahrhundert-Ausstellung of German painting. At that time interest in the work of Blechen and his fellow German Romantic painters, notably Caspar David Friedrich, was enjoying a revival.
