Description

  • José Mongrell
  • La Vendimia (The Grape Harvest)
  • signed and dated J. Mongrell / 1917 lower left
  • oil on canvas
  • 90 by 100cm., 35½ by 39in.

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. The canvas is slightly undulated and could benefit from light re-tensioning. There is some scattered hairline craquelure in the sky and some very fine stretcher marks visible along the left, right and upper edge. Ultra-violet light reveals some scattered spots of retouching along the lower framing edge and one small spot in the girl's skirt. Some fluorescence is also visible in the sky, however this does not appear to be associated with retouching. The work is in good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a gilt frame. The colours are strong and vibrant and slightly less red than in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

The Sorollistas Cecilio Pla, Eliseo Meifrén, Aureliano Beruete and Mongrell himself were all in some way indebted to the great master Joaquín Sorolla (lots 14, 16, 24). Yet, unlike Sorolla, who travelled widely both within Spain and beyond, Mongrell lived locally and his subjects were staunchly Valencian; and from a working class background himself, he had a particular appreciation for the everyday struggle of those around him.

From the outset, as evidenced in his famous Costumbres Valencianas which won him the second medal at the international exhibition in Barcelona in 1907, Mongrell’s paintings became a sort of paradigm of that 'Valencian way of life' which is so powerfully represented in the present work, as well as the following lot and Vuelta de la pesca (lot 15).
