Condition

The panel is slightly convex towards the upper right corner, but otherwise even, and ensuring a stable support. The overall appearance of the work is very good. There is some light surface rubbing along the extreme four framing edges, a pattern of very fine drying craquelure in the background and in certain areas of the flower composition, and a fine horizontal scratch along the far lower right corner. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals a layer of varnish and minor lines of old retouching along the left and bottom edge. The picture is overall in very good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

Jensen is often referred to as the 'father of Danish flower painting'. Born outside Copenhagen, he enrolled at the Royal Academy aged just fourteen, where he studied under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. His talent attracted the attention of Crown Prince Christian Frederick, later King Christian VIII, who awarded him a travelling scholarship.  The present work epitomises the extraordinary elegance and precocious eye for detail to be found in Jensen's still lifes.
