Description

  • Constantinos Volanakis
  • The Red Parasol
  • signed in Greek lower left
  • oil on canvas
  • 58 by 44.5cm., 22¾ by 17½in.

Provenance

Acquired by the great grandfather of the present owner in the 1940s; thence by descent

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There is a pattern of light surface drying craquelure in the lower half of the composition, as visible in the catalogue illustration, some light rubbing along the framing edges (with associated minor paint flaking to the right), and scattered surface spots in the sky. A 4mm tear is visible in the sky towards the upper left corner. Ultra-violet light reveals a thick layer of varnish and no visible sign of retouching. The picture could benefit from some surface cleaning and minor restoration. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
