Catalogue Note

Jean Richard Goubie, a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme, specialized in depictions of elegant riders with handsome horses.  This painting once formed part of the collection of the East Coast textile magnate, Catholina Lambert (1834-1923), until it was sold in his sale in 1916.   After being held in the family of the distinguished Virginian politician, Governor Elbert Lee Trinkle, for nearly a century, The Ride has only recently been rediscovered.
