On stable panel. Under UV: Varnish fluoresces. A few scattered fine strokes of inpainting in foreground. Possible area of restoration in lower right corner, visible to naked eye.

By the last decade of the nineteenth-century, Giovanni Fattori, an Italian etcher and plein-air painter, had abandoned his military scenes in favor of figures and animals by the sea near Maremma—a region of southern Tuscany that borders the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas.
