Catalogue Note

This allegorical pair representing Science and Agriculture betrays the Michelangelesque influence on Carpeaux's work in its dependence from the Renaissance master's figure of Twilight in Lorenzo de'Medici's tomb. The present models are thought to have been conceived as framing Carpeaux's sketch La France impériale éclairant le monde. Their monumental counterparts surmount the Triumph of Flora relief at the palais du Louvre.
