Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. A few stable original casting joints are visible, including at the proper left upper arm and the proper right ankle. There are a few nicks and scratches, notably to both elbows, the proper right hip, and the proper right knee and lower leg. There is some dark spotting to the patina in areas, in particular to the proper left side. The base is in good condition with a few minor chips, notably around the bottom edge.

Catalogue Note

Séraphin Denécheau studied under Rude and Jean-Pierre David (David D'Angers). He exhibited on a regular basis at the Salon from 1859, and his Femme carréssant une chimère was noted at the Paris 1867 Exposition Universelle. An artist of portraits, mythological and allegorical groups, he had numerous commissions from the French State, the Musée du Louvre, the Opéra de Paris, the Gare du Nord, and a number of Parisian churches.
