Catalogue Note
Giulio Monteverde was a master of narrative verismo who achieved enormous success with his series of sculptures on the theme of the genius as a youth, in the moment of their realisation of their destiny. Columbus as a Boy was modelled in 1870 and received a gold medal at the Parma exhibition in the same year, resulting in the purchase of the full-size marble version by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
