Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is very good with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age with some minor dust in the crevices. The reins have left some minor scratches on the patina. There is some wear to the patina, to the tips of the ears, at the haunches and stomach of the animal. There is an original square patch soldered to the underside. There is an area between the front legs with a circular pin and some blackening of the patina. The stirrups are cast separately.

Catalogue Note

Joseph Cuvelier is credited with having taught Edgar Degas how to sculpt. His own career flourished during the 1868 and 1870 Salons but Cuvelier entered the military service and died defending his country at the Battle of Buzenval in October 1870.
