Condition
Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is minor tarnishing to the gilding and silvering throughout. There appear to be losses to the tails of two of the dogs. The lid is slightly loose but stable at the hinges during opening. There are several scratches to the two basins on the inside.

This luxuriant inkwell exemplifies the creative fascination with naturalistic wildlife that defined the Animalier movement. The present model is rare, with only three known casts listed by Poletti and Richarme (op. cit.).
