Description

  • François Léon Sicard
  • Oedipus and the Sphinx
  • signed: FSicard and inscribed: F. BARBEDiENNE. Fondeur.
  • bronze, gilt patina

Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some tarnishing to the gilding in the crevices, including to Oedipus' proper left eye and hair, and the Sphinx's hair and proper left leg. Two original stable joints are visible at Oedipus' upper arms and proper right ankle, and there are a few casting plugs with some tarnishing. There is some slight pitting to the bronze in a few areas, including around the Sphinx's tail and wings. There are a few minor nicks and scratches, including to the Sphinx's hair on the proper right side and Oedipus' proper left knee. There appears to be an area of loss to the gilding to the inside of Oedipus' proper right lower leg.
