Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. Two original casting joints are slightly visible at the arms. There are a few minor nicks and scratches, including to the proper left thigh, the proper right hip, the balls in the proper left hand, and the chin. There are small areas of dryness to the patina below the proper right breast and around the proper left breast. The ball at the top is cast in two sections and has some losses to the patina. The marble base is composed of two sections with a slightly visible joint. There is minor wear to the base.

Georges Chauvel was among the earlier generation of sculptors that adopted a modernist aesthetic in their representation of the female form. He exhibited regularly in Paris, including at the Salon d'Automne, and was awarded a knighthood by the Légion d'Honneur.
