Overall the condition of the bronze is very good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some greening in some of the crevices. A few original casting pins are slightly visible, including at the man's proper right arm. The horse's tail is cast separately. There are a few light scratches, including to the haunches of the horse, to the man's proper right shoulder blade, and to the base.

Catalogue Note

Despite being a prolific and successful sculptor, Hans Wildermann focused his career on scenic design. His activity on the stage brought him to numerous major German cities, including Cologne, Berlin and Munich, where he created not only the backdrops to opera productions but also public sculpture, primarily in bronze. The present group, apparently a unique cast, is reminiscent of Wildermann's Jüngling mit Pferd which stands outside the Stadionschwimmbad in Cologne. Its conception suggests that the present group may have served as a model for a large-scale monument.
