Condition
Overall very good condition consistent with age and use. Faint scattered scuffs to both chairs. Minor seam separations running across the width of both backrests as seen in the catalogue and appear stable. One back rest with small scuffs near the rear right armrest proper. The upholstered drop in seats are original with overall wear and fading, one with two holes approximately 1 cm each in diameter, and one with a small tear approximately 1 cm running horizontally. A rare and important pair of chairs with excellent provenance that present very well overall.

Catalogue Note
These chairs were purchased by sculptor Benno Schotz from a Glasgow saleroom in 1939 or 1940. Originally part of a set of six, he sold four of the chairs to a collector who subsequently sold them at Sotheby's (Sotheby's Belgravia, 3 April, 1974, lots 52 and 53). The remaining pair, the offered lot, were passed by descent in 1975 and sold at Sotheby's in 2006.
