Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There is a pattern of hairline craquelure throughout, as visible in the catalogue illustration; however it does appear to be stable and it is not visually distracting. Some very superficial rubbing is visible along the right framing edge. Ultra-violet light reveals very small spots of retouching along the upper edge and some fine inpainting in the craquelure in the background, in the centre of the composition. The picture is otherwise in good condition and ready to hang. Presented in an elaborate gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

A student of Gustave Moreau, Marcel-Béronneau was an exquisite interpreter of the fin-de-siècle Symbolist movement. Like Moreau, he painted mythological themes and biblical stories in surreal and dream-like canvases such as this and Orphée (see following lot).  As with the majority of his female figures, it is likely that Germaine Marchant posed for the Salome in this work. The two were married in 1918.

Pierre Amédée Marcel-Beronneau exhibited at the Paris Salon and at the Rose + Croix Salon which was first held at the Durand Ruel Gallery in Paris in March 1892.
