Acquired from the above by the present owner, 2006

Literature

Paul Greenhalgh, ed., Art Nouveau 1890-1914, exh. cat., 6 April - 30 July 2000, London, 2000, p. 33, fig. 1.21 for a period illustration of the cabinets in their original form

Condition

Overall very good condition consistent with age and gentle use. Minor scuffs to the top surfaces with two hairlines approximately 5 cm in length to the top corner of each cabinet which have been sensitively and professionally stabilised. As stated in the catalogue, it is likely the cabinets were elements of a larger unit and converted into separate cabinets in the first half of the 20th century. One side of each cabinet has been professionally and seamlessly replaced. A square cut out to the underside interior of the cabinet moulding matches the replaced sides and is likely where hardware was installed to connect the middle unit (now lost) to the present lot. Each cabinet has a key and three shelves within.

Catalogue Note

It is likely that in the first half of the 20th century, this pair of cabinets was adapted from a larger cabinet, as seen in Greenhalgh, op. cit.
