Catalogue Note
Clésinger had a passionate interest in portraying Italian women, producing several busts of Roman and Neapolitan subjects between 1858 and 1861. The present marble can possibly be identified with the Romaine transtévérine exhibited at the Salon in 1859 as no. 3147. Shown at the Great Exhibition in London in 1862, the bust was celebrated for its seductive beauty and recorded in the possession of Ferdinand Barbedienne. The sitter for this portrait was Anna (Nanna) Risi, a famous Roman model, who posed for many famous artists, such as Anselm Feuerbach.
