Catalogue Note
This unusual ivory takes its composition from the 14th-century Madonna of Trapani in the Basilica of the Annunciation, Trapani, which became a major focus of devotion. Another ivory version is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. A. 550-1910).
