Description
- Figure of an Oriental
- shellwork, around a wood core, on an ebonised wood base with agate panels and gilt metal mounts
- Italian, 17th century
with remnants of an old label to the underside
Condition
Overall the condition of the shellwork is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The figure is composed in sections and it is possible there could be reattachments. The figure is probably reattached at below the proper left knee. There is a loss to one of the iridescent panels around the body of the base. There are various other small losses and breaks to the shells, particularly around the lower edge of the base, at the man's belt, breeches, and at his hands. Some of the shellwork may be reattached, such as at the proper left lower leg. The hat has been reattached, there are glue residues and various chips. The base is in good condition with minor stable splitting to the wood consistent with material. Some of the foliate gilt metal mounts are lost. There is evidence of past worming to the wood.
