Catalogue Note

This attractive verre églomisé panel adopts a composition broadly inspired by Hendrik Golzius' 1578 engraving of The Annunciation after Maarten de Vos. Compare, for example, with the print in the collections of Amherst College (inv. no. AC 1973.73). Another German 17th-century verre églomisé panel after an engraving by Hendrik Golzius' of one of Maarten de Vos' works (a scene with St. Matthew) was sold in these rooms on 12 December 1996, lot 208.
