Catalogue Note

Though the style of the painting of this dish is very different from that on the other Pavia dishes in this sale, the appearance of several similar features, including the same distinctive tall tower, ties the group together.

Also, an 'AF' marked dish in the Herzog Anton-Ulrich collection, with the elaborate moulded border (of the type which used to be ascribed to Angarano), has both the tower and the formal farmhouse of the present piece (Bortolotto, op. cit., 1981, pls. CCXIV and CCXV).

It is tempting to attribute the painting of this piece to Siro Domenico Africa, nephew of Siro Antonio, simply because it is a later version of a similar subject, but perhaps not enough is yet known to make a firm attribution.
