Condition

The paper may have darkened a little in this work and some of the more subtle watercolour pigments have probably softened a little. In general the images is easily readable. The sheet has not been laid down.

Catalogue Note

Pocock was born in Bristol and spent his early life at sea. In circa 1778 he settled in London and devoted himself to painting. He was successful and was patronised by the Navy Board, Admiral Lord Hood, Lord Bridport, Lord Gambier, Lord Barham and many other great navel men. 

According to an inscription on the mount, this work was once in the collection of Sir Bruce Ingram (1877‐1963). He was a passionate collector of British and Old Master paintings and drawings and is particularly associated with marine art.
