Catalogue Note
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, many pottery and porcelain factories interested themselves in the exotic glazing and lustring techniques of earlier masters, from Chinese crystalline glazes to the celebrated red and gold lustred decoration of Italian maiolica. Some achieved real innovation, and few can have been as successful as the rare and rich iridescent canary yellow of the present lot. Another example is illustrated in the Ginori and Cantagalli exhibition catalogue (op. cit., no. 8) while a dish with an iridescent dark ochre border is also illustrated, no. 78.
