Catalogue Note

It is recorded in Vita di Luigi Valadier that in April 1775 Luigi Valadier was paid for 'una Cornice di metallo dorato a due ordini d'intaglio con suo piano in Lapislazzero, con dieci putti, e festoni di fiori d'argento ed altro .'1

The present sheet, from the album, is a presentation drawing for a frame commissioned by Prince Chigi as a gift to Pope Pius VI.  The purpose of the frame was to house a relic of his saintly predecessor Pius V.

The use of lapis lazuli was frequent in Rome from the 17th Century onwards, and the stone was employed in several documented Valadier commissions.
