Description

  • A VERY RARE AND EARLY GILT-METAL SPHERICAL STRIKING WATCH CIRCA 1550
  • gilt brass
  • dimensions 65 x 56 mm
• later movement circa 1620 brass plates, verge escapement with foliot • gilt dial external disc with Roman numerals and internal disc with Arab numerals (24 hours) and blue steel hand • gilt-metal spherical case engraved and chased

Condition

Please note that the movement has not been checked for timekeeping accuracy and Sotheby's will not be held responsible for any repairs should they be required. The movement is working at the time of cataloging but not the striking mechanism. Case with fissure on the rim, dial is in good condition with scuffs due to use and age. Internal disc of the dial is probably later. The movement is later and dates from around 1610/20 and has extensive later restoration throughout.

Catalogue Note

This type of spherical watch could have been afforded only by the wealthiest of merchants and royalty and was worn on a belt along with a sword and dagger. Though inaccurate in their timekeeping abilities, such items were prized for their beauty and ingenuity.
