  • "Geranium" Salesman's Sample Panel
  • impressed 16" GERANIUM #1451
  • leaded glass and patinated metal

Provenance

Jeffrey C. Thier, New York State, 1973

Condition

Overall in good condition. With approximately 10 hairline cracks to the glass tiles of the geranium floral pattern, and 1 hairline crack to the background register. The black background glass tiles appear to have been reset, and 5 of these glass tiles appear to have been replaced. With some light surface scratches, minor surface wear and surface soiling to the background glass. The outer metal frame with light rubbing, light surface scratches and minor discolorations consistent with age and gentle handling. The bottom two corners of the frame possibly stabilized in the past. The salesman sample is a flat work that represents the artistry and glass selection intended for a portion of a full-scaled lamp (model number 1451). In this case, the “Geranium” pattern displays a highly artistic and well-varied glass selection articulated in saturated tonalities of deep reds, magentas, pinks, and cobalt. With two 29-inch long chains suspended from hooks in the upper corners which appear to be original. The panel is ideally suited to be suspended in front of a window so that it may be illuminated from natural day light. When viewed firsthand the colors of the glass are more nuanced and varied than seen in the catalogue illustration, which is slightly over saturated. The floral cluster appearing on the left shows rich reds and magentas, while the floral cluster on the right shows more subtle hues of vivid pinks striated with white. A highly visual and dynamic small-scaled study.
