  • "Black-Eyed Susan" Salesman's Sample Panel
  • impressed 16" B.E. SUSAN #1447
  • leaded glass and patinated metal

Provenance

Jeffrey C. Thier, New York State, 1973

Literature

Martin Eidelberg, Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, Nancy A. McClelland and Lars Rachen, The Lamps of Louis Comfort Tiffany, New York, 2005, p. 77 (for the present example illustrated)

Condition

Overall in very good condition. With approximately 5 hairline cracks to the glass tiles of the floral pattern. The black glass background passages appear to have been reset retaining the original glass. With two “Dutchmen” (added lead flanges) to the top proper left corner of the panel. One of these Dutchmen is slightly lose and lifting and would benefit from being stabilized. With some light surface scratches, minor surface wear and surface soiling to the black background glass. The outer metal frame with light rubbing, light surface scratches and minor discolorations consistent with age and gentle handling. The salesman sample is a flat work that represents the artistry and glass selection intended for a portion of a full-scaled lamp (model number 1447). With two 29-inch long chains suspended from hooks in the upper corners which appear to be original. The panel is ideally suited to be suspended in front of a window so that it may be illuminated from natural day light. When viewed firsthand the colors of the glass are slightly more subtle and nuanced than seen in the catalogue illustration, which is slightly over saturated. The centers of the black-eyed Susan blossoms are thoughtfully rendered in dimensional “rippled” glass. A highly visual and dynamic small-scaled study.
