the frame enclosing a signed work by Bothering, Seascape, 1913, pastel on paper (not illustrated)

Condition

The gilt bronze surfaces throughout retain a rich warm patina, showing gentle rubbing, a few scattered light surface scratches and light surface soiling to some of the recessed contours of the design consistent with age and gentle use. The bronze surfaces with a few small and minor areas of discoloration consistent with age and use. There is a rich red patina in the recessed portions of the decorative panels as seen in the catalogue illustration which adds strong visual interest to the frame. The inset coral cabochons present with a more vivid and saturated hue when viewed firsthand in comparison to the catalogue illustration. Each of the cabochons all appear original, intact and undisturbed. The reverse with a few areas of minor discoloration, scattered surface scratches and areas of light rubbing to the patina along the lower edge adjacent to the easel stand. The reverse appears to retain the original easel stand, sliding back plate and associated hardware. The clear glass front with scattered minute edge chips throughout and one larger chip measuring 1/8 inch in length, none of which are visible once the glass is installed in the frame. An outstanding example of this rare frame displaying impressive scale, strong coloration to the applied patina and beautiful coral cabochon accents. This frame includes a pastel by Bothering, signed and dated Bothering 1913 to the lower left. This work is in very good condition. A few possible surface secretions to the upper right portion of the work. Minor traces of wear to the upper left corner. The colors are very fresh thanks to the delicate technique. Please feel welcome to contact the department for photos showing this pastel presented in the frame.
