Literature

Alastair Duncan, Tiffany Lamps and Metalware, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 2007, p. 409, no. 1647 (for the present example illustrated)
Martin Eidelberg, Nina Gray and Margaret K. Hofer, A New Light on Tiffany:  Clara Driscoll and the Tiffany Girls, London, 2007, pp. 78-79 (for related trivets)

Condition

Overall in very good condition. All of the favrile mosaic glass appears to be original, intact and undisturbed. The glass with some occasional edge wear and minor surface flecks (some possibly inherent in the making), and with surface soiling to the recessed contours of the grouting. With one shallow surface fleck along the perimeter border of one of the upper blue background tiles (approximately 1/4 x 3/16 inch). A few areas of superficial wear to the mosaic glass iridescence, consistent with age and gentle use. With a small minor loss to the lower blue tile adjacent to the proper right wing of the butterfly (visible in the catalogue illustration). The patinated bronze surfaces with some occasional light surface scratches, rubbing, discoloration and a few light traces of surface oxidation, consistent with age and gentle use, largely concentrated to the perimeter of the underside. An exceptional example of one of Tiffany’s rare mosaic trivets incorporating “Cypriote” favrile glass to articulate the butterfly and perimeter border composition. The Cypriote glass is intensely iridized, imparting the trivet with strong luminous color. When viewed firsthand the colors of the mosaic glass are more vibrant and nuanced than seen in the catalogue illustration, which is slightly dark and over saturated.
