Catalogue Note
As the son and grandson of architects, Louis Haghe was fascinated by the architecture of great buildings and as a pioneering early lithographer, he depicted many of the most important buildings of Europe, the Middle East and beyond. The basilica of St Peter's in Rome was a particular favourite and he painted it many times (four examples are at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London). The present picture depicts the magnificent transept looking towards the tomb of St Peter, a view he had painted before when it was thronged with worshippers during a festival. It is an unusually large oil painting by Haghe.
According to an inscription on the reverse of the painting, this picture belonged to Francois d'Orleans, the son of King Louis Philippe of France. He was a Roman Catholic and the subject of St Peter's would therefore have greatly appealed to him.
