Condition
The paper cockles slightly; small horizontal tear near centre of right edge. Some small flecks of paint loss and scratches about the composition. The work is a little dirty.
No signs of retouching under ultraviolet light.
Held in a simple gilt frame under glass; unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note
On his deathbed in 1873 Edwin Landseer expressed a wish that Millais complete his life-sized equestrian picture and in 1882 Millais added the figure of his daughter Effie and titled the picture Nell Gwynne.
