Condition

The canvas is lined and the impasto has flattened a little. There is a small faint area of craquelure below the central boy's feet, otherwise the work appears clean and ready to hang. Ultraviolet light reveals flecked retouchings in the sky, the left corner and areas between the central figures. Held in a gilt composite frame.

Catalogue Note

Morgan painted another composition depicting children playing snowballs in 1865 (Victoria & Albert Museum, London) which is of a similar size and may have been intended to form a pair with the present picture. It is unclear which picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1865.
