Catalogue Note

If joined these maps make a wall-map over 2 metres by 1.3 metres, from the Mediterranean in the north to Aswan in the south, and including the Nile, Sinai peninsula and Red Sea coastline.

This rare map, although published separately, bears comparison with the map of Egypt found in volume 1 of Pococke's A Description of the East, published in the same year (see lot 96), which is drawn and engraved by T. Jefferys and dated March 1743 (Tibbetts, Arabia in early maps, no.262). The area depicted is the same, with the same cartographical information, though the dedication, cartouches and keys differ, and the map offered here is very much larger.
