Oblong folio (294 x 364mm.), 51 ALBUMEN PRINTS (165 x 205mm., or the reverse), mounted on card, recto only, each neatly captioned in pencil on the mount, preliminary "Remarks" in purple ink on the preliminary blank leaf, 4pp. autograph letter signed by Robert Milligan in purple ink (dated 6 Jan. 1872) addressed to "Mrs Thomson" about sending this album of photographs to her husband, contemporary morocco gilt, upper cover lettered in gilt, gilt edges, binding slightly worn

The gift of Robert Milligan (of The Cedars, Putney, London) to Mr & Mrs Thomson (possibly a distant relation) in the United States (letter dated 6 January 1872).

Catalogue Note
A GOOD ALBUM INCLUDING MANY PHOTOGRAPHS OF MOORISH ARCHITECTURE IN SEVILLE AND CORDOBA. The images show Seville (21), Cordoba (8), Barcelona (6), Tarragona (5), Valencia (5), Saragossa/Zaragoza (3), one of St Sebastian, and 2 of Biarritz in France.
In the preliminary "Remarks", Milligan describes the mosque at Cordoba, as "the most splendid and perfect religious edifice ever erected by the Moors in Spain. Probably the finest Mohmmedan temple in existence" and continues with his praise of Seville cathedral, Pilate's House and the Giralda Tower. In the accompanying letter Milligan writes "An opportunity I have been wishing for, presents itself, for my sending to you by private hand, a small package, containing a book of original Spanish Photographs, selected from the first prints from a series of negatives in my possession, executed for me in 1869".
