Catalogue Note

RARE PHOTOGRAPHS OF KOREA. Rossetti (1876-1948) was Italian consul to Korea, from November 1902 to May 1903, during which time he took a large number of photographs of Korean people, their life and customs, buildings and landscape. In February 1904 he gave two illustrated lectures about Korea at the Società Geografica Italiana, in the presence of the King, and displayed a series of his photographs. Following these talks Rossetti donated two photograph albums and some glass slides to the Society. Rossetti published a large number of his photographs in two books Corea e Coreani (Bergamo, 1904 and 1905), a recent copy of which is included in this lot. In 2003 the Italian Geographical Society under the patronage of the Korean Embassy in Rome held an exhibition of Rossetti's donated photographs.
