Catalogue Note

The photographs include images taken in Canton, Shanghai, Hong Kong, "French Indo-China", Nanning, Samshui, Moukden, Ting Wu, Lungchow, and Korea (Seoul). These photographs, a mix of amateur and professional images were taken and collected by an American employee of the Standard Oil Company. One photograph is captioned "View of Nanning ... I lived here 29 months", he also appears to have worked in Samshui and Canton. An interesting series of images is captioned "Departure of General Tam Ho Ming from Nanning in 1917 to lead the southern Chinese forces against the north. This marked the beginning of the present civil war in China."
