Catalogue Note

RARE. Due to a devastating fire in Kyoto in 1788 this profusely illustrated work remains an important historical record of buildings that were destroyed.
Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital from 794 until 1868, functioning as a political, historical, cultural, and religious centre, filled with Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, the Imperial palace, villas, tombs, pagodas, etc., many of which are illustrated in these 11 volumes.
Some literature mistakenly states that the first edition was published in 1780.
