Catalogue Note
Sir Peter Holmes (1932-2002) was chairman of Royal Dutch Shell, and was a distinguished traveller, mountaineer, fisherman and photographer. The photographs include views in Hama (2), Crac des Chevaliers (2), Latakia, Qalaat Salah ad-Din (2), the church of St Simeon, Aleppo (4), Rasafah (2), Halabiye, Qalaat Rahba, excavations at Mari, Qasr al-Hir ash-Sharqi, and Palmyra (6). The album appears to be privately produced, and is therefore possibly unique.
