Description

  • A picturesque tour through Holland, Brabant, and part of France; made in the autumn of 1789. Illustrated with copper plates in aqua-tinta from drawings made on the spot. London: for T. & I. Egerton, 1790 [but c.1795]

Catalogue Note

A FINELY BOUND COPY FROM THE LIBRARY OF LORD CLONBROCK. This copy contains 46 aquatints, as called for, of which 40 (of the 42) views are present in two states, sepia and coloured (plate 8 is present in a coloured state only and plate 43 is present uncoloured only). Apparently an earlier issue than Abbey 185, having no printed titles and with the engraved titles, the 2 engraved plates, and the sepia aquatint plates dated May 1st 1790, as in the first edition, and with the coloured plates dated February 1st 1795. In this copy plates 31 and 48 do not appear, as in the first edition, and nor are they are called for in the list of plates; Abbey notes that these two plates appear for the first time in his later issue.
